Story
Manu (Taapsee), Bali (Anil Grover), Buggu Lakhanpal (Vikram Kochhar), and Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal) are friends from Laltu in Punjab. They decide to move to London for a variety of reasons.
They realize that they need to learn English in order to pass the IELTS exam and join the training courses available. A soldier named Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan) helps them achieve their dream of crossing the border to London using the illegal “dunky” route.
This is a film about who Hardy is and he is helping others. It shows why the friends chose the illegal route to London instead of the legal one.
The film depicts Hardy’s experiences and journey trying to illegally cross the border into London using the “Dunki” (Donkey Flight) route.
So basically, it’s a story about friends from Punjab who risk moving to London illegally to study, with the help of a mysterious detective, and the adventures they encounter in the process the law does not get permit.
Technical Aspects
The music composed by Pritam is good and the background music by Aman Pant is beautiful. Overall, product quality is decent. However, the computer graphics (CGI) seems a little weak in some scenes.
Rajkumar Hirani, who is also the editor of Dunki, seems to have interrupted some important details about the backstory of Shah Rukh Khan’s character midway.
Naturally, people expect great films from a talented director like Rajkumar Hirani. But here, he and Dunki have done just the right job. This is not to say that Dunky is a bad film, but expectations were high considering Hirani’s earlier good work.
As mentioned earlier, the director could have conveyed the emotional aspects of the story better.
Review
Overall, Dunki explores an interesting concept of illegal immigration, but director Rajkumar Hirani’s execution is decent rather than great. The humor in the film is very good. However, the emotional intimacy that was Hirani’s greatest strength in his earlier films is somewhat lacking in Dunki.
There are a few good moments in the second half, but the film ultimately doesn’t leave much of an impact. Shah Rukh Khan gives a good performance, and the film also benefits from good performances from Taapsee Pannu, Anil Grover and Vikram Kochhar.
While not a bad film, Dunki falls short of the expectations of a director like Hirani due to the lack of a heavy emotional punch. If you can overlook these flaws, you can give this movie a try with its interesting premise, humor, performances, and those few quirks.
But if you expect a powerful emotional ride like Hirani’s earlier books, Dunki may not be entirely satisfied. Before you watch this, manage your expectations accordingly.
