Story
Lekha, played by Mehreen Pirzada, has very high hopes for her future husband. She rejects every man her father proposes. She then meets a nobleman succeeded by Vikranta and falls for him immediately. At the same time, a group of people in the city start killing each other, but before doing so, they also hurt others. Lekha’s parents believe that Arya may have been involved in the death. Who is really responsible for this mysterious death? Why does it happen? What does the murderer want? That’s what Spark is all about.
Strength
The filmmakers spent a lot of money on the film, and you can see the tremendous production value in every scene. Even though the lead actress is new to the industry, the team made the film without pressure and without cutting corners. The stunning graphics, stunning set designs and the cinematography of the songs are a delight to the eyes.
Making his debut, Vikrant has done a decent job as an actor and has a lovely look. Mehreen and Rukshar Dhillon were beautiful and effective in their respective roles. The vanilla teenager and Truth’s comic moments provide some relief throughout the film. Guru Somasundaram gave a solid performance though his voice dubbing could have been better. The second half of the film had some good points especially compared to the first half.
Weakness
The main problem with Spark is that it tries to include too many features, thus mixing too many genres. Simply put, Spark is an overwhelming piece of work that tries to be suspense, romance, comedy and action all at once, but the story doesn’t work out.
The main idea for Spark was supposed to be more crime thriller, but because they tried to include too much, it didn’t quite work out. Spark sometimes reminds us of other films like 7th Sense and Thani Oruvan.
Apart from the poor writing, the other big issue is the length of the film. It’s almost 3 hours long, and tests the audience’s endurance. Just when you think it’s going to end, they add more subplots and twists, but they’re predictable.
Technical Aspects
Hesham Abdul Wahab gave some really good music, and the background score was ok. AR Ashok Kumar’s visuals are a joy to watch. But the editing team didn’t do a good job, as the film ended up being over 20 minutes longer than it should have been. This affected some of the best scenes, because it wasn’t. However, the product value is good.
While Spark’s story isn’t particularly new, the film could have been an interesting commercial if the execution had been better. However, there were cases where inexperience was evident, and the story spread. A few decent moments in the second half, but they were rare.
Review
Overall, Spark had the potential to be a good entertainer, but the storyline fell short. Leading actors Vikrant, Mehreen Pirzada and Rukshar Dhillon perform well, with some decent moments in the second half. But the movie drags on for about 3 hours unnecessarily, making it hard to sit through that long. As a result, the end result is not very satisfactory.
